THE RIGHT STUFF
Sloth-Preneur
For those of you that were fortunate to have read our first premiere issue last week you probably remember that this section begins with the analysis of an animal's characteristics. Well this week we will study the Sloth. The Sloth is a slow moving native of Central and South America. It's name carries the meaning "laziness". As the name implies, it is a slow moving, clumsy animal. It is one of the laziest of all animals. It sleeps about 18 hours a day. The few hours that it is awake it spends hanging upside down in trees and eating the leaves it also sleeps hanging upside down in the crotch of a tree.
The female Sloth has one young Sloth during the summer and the baby Sloth learns to hang from birth. Hanging motionless for hours, the fur of this animal blends well with the trees of the dense forest. A tiny plant algae often grows on the fur of this animal. This green shimmer make the Sloth more difficult to see in the trees and helps to hide it from enemies. While on the ground the Sloth is the slowest mammal's on earth. His body rubs the ground as it pulls itself along on it's front claws. The Sloth's weak hind legs and long claws make walking impossible. In fact it is almost helpless on the ground and quite vulnerable to attacks. The Sloth has such a firm grip with their hook like claws that even when they die, they sometimes remain attacked to branches. It is hard to tell whether it is dead or alive by their lack of movement. It can however, turn it's flexible neck far to each side so that it can see in almost every direction. But what good does that serve when he sleeps his life away? Finally, the Sloth does not hear well, but it has excellent eyesight for traveling through the trees at night.
I know you are thinking what does all this have to do with being an Entrepreneur? For those of you who have not figured it out yet, first let's relate it's slow moving and laziness to the human quality of procrastination. Procrastination is one of the biggest reason why many people do not succeed in their own business. The reason why most people procrastinate is because of being afraid to make a mistake. The problem with that is the only ones who don't make mistakes are the ones that never do anything. Thus goes the vicious cycle of not being successful. You would not believe some of the excuses people use for procrastinating. It can become a habit, one that could prove very difficult to break. Soon the procrastination becomes as normal as breathing, but the day that will change everything in your life is the day that you make up your mind that you are going to take action. Is that going to be TODAY? or TOMORROW?
It is never too late to take action on your dreams. First, write down the things you have always wanted to do but have been putting off. Next, write down what you are going to do about achieving those things. And lastly, write out a detailed plan of action, a step by step program if you will, to assure that you are successful at achieving your goals. If you are lacking in some area to qualify in reaching your goal, then write down exactly what you need in order to reach your goal. Also write down the action needed to get whatever it is that is required. Start today making a conscious, deliberate effort to give up anything that has been holding you back up until now. Make yourself this promise, that if anything at all comes up in your life that could possibly benefit me or someone else I will say YES immediately. Why immediately? Because if you give yourself time to think about it, you will probably end up saying NO. It is true that procrastination is the greatest thief of time. You cannot afford to let anything rob you of your precious time, and why not? Because none of us know how much time we have left. Why not seize the opportunity while it's right in front of you?
Let each of us determine today that we will have nothing whatsoever to do with the slow moving Sloth and that we refuse to keep idly waiting around wasting precious time not accomplishing anything worthwhile with our time. Instead decide today that you are going to become the successful Entrepreneur that you have always wanted and deserve to be.
See you next week when we discover another valuable lesson to be taught from the animal kingdom.
